I have two goldfish in my aquarium and want to be sure I use the best gravel in the substrate. I have heard that fish can get a bit of gravel stuck in their mouth if the size is wrong and am worried about this. Please advise which is the best gravel to use in my fresh water aquarium.

      Hi Maggie!

      Thank you for your question!

Goldfish are able to live with a range of different gravel sizes and even sand. Depending on the size of the mouth of the Goldfish, this will then determine the size of the gravel. If you have young juvenile goldifsh you could get away with a smaller sized gravel. If you have larger goldfish then a larger sized gravel would be more appropriate.

The optimal size would be anything over 5-7mm in size. We do sell a larger gravel pebble called: “Axolotl and Turtle” which have pebbles sized from 1.5cm – 3cm in size, which would be the safest option alongside with aquarium sand.

There is also a range with Aqua One that we have here in store which has larger sized gravel in some colour options too.

If you had any other questions please don’t hesitate to ask as we will be happy to help!

      Take care
